HIV/AIDS in North Carolina & the South
HIV/AIDS is not simply a pandemic that is happening in some other part of the world. HIV/AIDS affects people that you know, people that you love, people in North Carolina, people in the Triad, people in your neighborhood.
While infection rates are dropping across most of the U.S., they are increasing dramatically in the South, especially among African-American women and young people, particularly in their early 20s. Read the MSNBC story.

We are working to eradicate stigma and discrimination in our society by addressing misconceptions and misinformation about HIV/AIDS. When we all get educated, we lower infection rates. Did you know . . .
- Every 14 seconds, someone between the ages of 15 and 24 is infected with HIV disease.
- Approximately 8,000 people die every day from AIDS-related complications.
- An estimated 31,000 individuals are living with HIV disease in North Carolina.
- 25% of infected people in North Carolina live in rural areas.
- Half of all new infections are in people under the age of 25.
- There is a 14% increase in the number of people over the age of 50 who are being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.
- 1/3 of the infected population is not even aware that they are infected.
While HIV disease is unpredictable and incurable, it is preventable and treatable!
